That would depend on the relative humidity inside your home, airflow, whether or not you sealed the ends of the sleepers, etc. As a bare minimum, definitely seal the ends of the wood.

I just bought new fresh green oak sleepers (wet to the touch), with the intention of building a work bench when they are dry enough. They are currently in my front room drying (with spacers). I have a feeling this is not going to work, is the change too much indoors?

Any advice?

I’ve read your article there was a lot I didn’t consider.

I just got a 5’x15”diam piece of mulberry that I plan to carve as a single sculpture. So it won’t be used in plank form. The wood is still green and wet. Any suggestions about how to speed the drying process so that I don’t have to wait 7 years to carve it? Should I at least remove the bark, which won’t be part of the finished work?

Any thoughts on drying them?

Why are you ending up with a 14” wide slab from a 36” wide log? What set up are you using that requires you to put those heavy thing under the router sled when they are green just to stack them? I am just lost trying to picture it. I set up on a log and put wood strips cut to the size of my kerf as i go. If you mill the whole log where you’re looking to dry it then it stacks itself as you cut that way. Im not usually that lucky though

I dry fungus and plant materials by putting them in my car over the summer. The temperature in a car on a hot summer day can easily reach 200 degrees F, and even a mild day can drive the temperature over 100F. It’s not a consistent heat, like a kiln, but it eliminates insect and other arthropod infestation. The fungi I usually dry are the very ones which cause heart-rot / dry rot; shelf mushrooms and woody conks. There is some chance that some species of fungi have spores that can protect themselves from the heat, but I’ve never given it a try; what I do know is that under normal conditions your finished wood would be subjected to, there wouldn’t be enough water to reactivate the spores

Of course, if your wood slabs are too long to fit in the car, it’s not a solution.

How did your project come out, Ben? I’m contemplating a similar technique in making a tool-storage stand out of a birch log, but the difference is that my log has a completely rotten core. No worries about checking during drying, it’s all soft at the core! But if the stand comes out well, it’ll be something I may want to replicate, and your project’s outcome is relevant to future partially-hollowed logs like the ones I’d be making.

I generally recommend 1 year per inch plus a year, so 2 inch timbers take 3 years, 3 inch take 4 years etc.
Also, when stickering, I always recommend to my students to use the same tree (good use of limb wood, trunk wood) or same type wood to prevent staining. Also, always be sure the stickers are in a straight, vertical line. That keeps the timbers flat and the most weight available.
One other suggestion is to stack the timbers in order, a flitch, makes book matching easier, and keeping different woods together when doing multiple logs.
Good job on the other info,
Mr. Mike

I picked up this 14”thick by 30”diameter cedar slab the other day in the hopes of making it a natural stump looking side table. Was planning on letting it dry outside for months (maybe years) but wondering if I use a hatchet to hollow out a large crater about 7” deep and 15” across on the bottom side – would this lead to worse checking or possibly splitting the piece completely ? Or help with the drying time/overall weight?
Thank you so much – anything you might be able to offer is appreciated.
Ben

I recently pick up a heavy log from the beach on the east cost of South Africa. it is still wet on the inside.

I live inland in Johannesburg which is not humid at all.

how do I preserve this piece to use as a glass topped coffee table.

Kind Regards

Shailen

At this point, it is pretty heavily checked throughout. I would just embrace those flaws, and once more thoroughly dried, you could filled the gaps in with epoxy, possibly with a contrasting color if so desired.

We cut down an English Oak (we think) a year ago. The tree trunk was cut in a log 3000mmx450mmx650mm and a plank 3000mx150mmx650mm. There is no treatment applied to date. All sides have been sanded. See photos attached. We live in South Africa (Pretoria) fairly dry not a lot of humidity here. Any recommendation on how we could dry/preserve this wood.

Merhaba serkan.
Kullanacak oldu?un ah?ab? a?ac? kestikten hemen sonra kestirme. A?aç mümkünse kuru bir ortamda tomruk halinde en az 1 sene dinlendirilmeli. E?er a?ac? keser kesmez biçtirirseniz çal??ma oran? iki kat fazla olacakt?r vede çatlama kaç?n?lmaz derecede çok fazla olur. ?artlar müsaitse a?ac? 1 sene tomruk halinde bekletip ondan sonra bictirilip bir daha kurutulmaya al?n?nca çal??ma ve çatlama oran? çok çok dü?ecektir.
