Sapwood color ranges from nearly white, to an off-white cream color, sometimes with a reddish or golden hue. The heartwood tends to be a darker reddish brown. <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/birdseye-maple\/\">Birdseye maple<\/a> is a figure found most commonly in hard maple, though it&#8217;s also found less frequently in other species. Hard maple can also be seen with <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/curly-maple\/\">curly<\/a> or <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/quilted-maple\/\">quilted<\/a> grain patterns.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-grain-texture\/\">Grain\/Texture:<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>Grain is generally straight, but may be wavy. Has a fine, even texture.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-durability\/\">Rot Resistance:<\/a> <\/strong>Rated as non-durable to perishable, and susceptible to insect attack.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-workability\/\"><strong>Workability:<\/strong><\/a> Fairly easy to work with both hand and machine tools, though slightly more difficult than <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/soft-maple\/\">soft maple<\/a> due to hard maple&#8217;s higher density. Maple has a tendency to burn when being machined with high-speed cutters such as in a router. Turns, glues, and finishes well, though blotches can occur when staining, and a pre-conditioner, gel stain, or toner may be necessary to get an even color.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-odor\/\">Odor:<\/a> <\/strong>No characteristic odor.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-allergies-and-toxicity\/\"><strong>Allergies\/Toxicity:<\/strong><\/a> Hard maple, along with other maples in the <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/hardwoods\/sapindaceae\/acer\/\"><em>Acer<\/em> genus<\/a> have been reported to cause skin irritation, runny nose, and asthma-like respiratory effects. (It&#8217;s also the <a class=\"ar\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/state-trees-of-the-united-states\/\">state tree<\/a> in four\u00a0different\u00a0states in the US.)<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also called rock maple, its wood may be fairly considered as the king of the <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/hardwoods\/sapindaceae\/acer\/\"><em>Acer<\/em> genus<\/a>.
