Occurs most often in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/soft-maple\/\">soft maples<\/a>, but is also seen much less often in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/hard-maple\/\">hard maple<\/a>. The highest grades of quilted figure occur primarily in\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/bigleaf-maple\/\">bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum<\/a>).<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/distribution\/\"><strong>Distribution:<\/strong><\/a> Primarily temperate regions in the Northern Hemisphere<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/average-dried-weight\/\"><strong>Average Dried Weight:<\/strong><\/a> 30.2 to 38.0 lbs\/ft<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0(485 to 610 kg\/m<sup>3<\/sup>) depending on species<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/janka-hardness\/\"><strong>Janka Hardness:<\/strong><\/a> 700 to 950 lb<sub>f<\/sub>\u00a0(4,230 N) depending on species<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #105378;\"><strong>Comments:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Quilted maple is so named for its resemblance to patchwork patterns seen on fabric quilts. Much like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/birdseye-maple\/\">birdseye maple<\/a>, the figure on quilted maple becomes most pronounced when the board has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/what-is-wood\/#surfaces\">flatsawn<\/a>, (which is the opposite of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/curly-maple\/\">curly maple, <\/a>which is accentuated through quartersawing). Alternate names and sub-categories for this type of figuring include blistered, curly-quilt, sausage-quilt, tubular-quilt, and angel-step.<\/p><p>There are varying grades of quilted maple, based upon the perceived depth of the quilt, as well as the purity of color of the wood itself (with a pure and uniform white being the most valuable). Quilted maple billets are often sold for extremely high prices for use as tops of electric guitars.
