luster. Unfinished wood surfaces can feel greasy\/oily to the touch.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-durability\/\">Rot Resistance:<\/a> <\/strong>Iroko is very durable, and is resistant to both rot and insect attack; it&#8217;s sometimes used as a substitute for <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/teak\/\">genuine teak <em>(Tectona grandis)<\/em><\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-workability\/\"><strong>Workability:<\/strong><\/a> Generally easy to work, with the exception of its interlocked grain, which may cause some tearout during surfacing operations. Also, deposits of calcium carbonate are sometimes present, which can have a significant dulling effect on cutters. Iroko glues and finishes well.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-odor\/\">Odor:<\/a> <\/strong>No characteristic odor.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-allergies-and-toxicity\/\"><strong>Allergies\/Toxicity:<\/strong><\/a> Although severe reactions are quite uncommon, iroko has been reported as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-allergies-and-toxicity\/#sensitizer\">sensitizer<\/a>. Usually most common reactions simply include eye, skin, and respiratory irritation. Iroko can\u00a0 also cause other health effects in sensitive individuals, such as asthma-like symptoms, boils, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Veneer can also be seen for sale, and is likewise affordably priced.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/restricted-and-endangered-wood-species\/\"><strong>Sustainability:<\/strong><\/a> This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices, but is on the IUCN Red List. The reinstatement of the genus Milicia Sim (Moraceae). <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.2307\/3668057\"><i>Bulletin du Jardin botanique national de Belgique\/Bulletin van de Nationale Plantentuin van Belgie<\/i>, 225-<span class=\"ext-footnote\">229<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_411_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_411_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script> with two recognized species<em> (M. excelsa<\/em> and <em>M. regia).<\/em> Both <em>Milicia<\/em> species are sold commercially as iroko, though <em>M. excelsa<\/em> is much more widespread and common throughout tropical Africa, with <em>M. regia<\/em> being restricted to a narrower region of forest areas within West Africa.<\/p><p>Iroko is sometimes marketed as a low-cost alternative to <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/teak\/\">genuine teak<\/a>, and is even sold under the name African teak, though that common name is much more commonly applied to <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/afrormosia\/\">afrormosia <em>(Pericopsis elata)<\/em><\/a>\u2014but neither of these woods are botanically related to true teak. Nonetheless, the wood is stable, durable, and has an overall look that somewhat resembles
