Ebony turns superbly, and takes a very high natural polish.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-odor\/\">Odor:<\/a><\/strong> No characteristic odor.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-allergies-and-toxicity\/\"><strong>Allergies\/Toxicity:<\/strong><\/a> Although severe reactions are quite uncommon, ebony in the <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/hardwoods\/ebenaceae\/diospyros\/\">Diospyros genus<\/a> has been reported as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-allergies-and-toxicity\/#sensitizer\">sensitizer<\/a>. Expect prices to be very high, and availability to be very scarce. Other ebonies such as <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/gaboon-ebony\/\">Gaboon<\/a> or <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/macassar-ebony\/\">Macassar<\/a> are more commonly available, though both are also very expensive.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/restricted-and-endangered-wood-species\/\"><strong>Sustainability:<\/strong><\/a> This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices, is currently not evaluated by the IUCN for inclusion on the Red List. This absence of any evaluation is notable, as Coromandel ebony was a historically exploited commercial species, and the IUCN has evaluated several hundred <em>Diospyros<\/em> species, including many other species that have been harvested and used for ebony. (Perhaps an evaluation is pending, as the closely related <em>D. ebenum<\/em> is listed as Data Deficient and has not been updated since 1998.)<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #105378;\"><strong>Common Uses:<\/strong><\/span> Inlay, carving, musical instrument parts (piano keys, bridges, nuts, etc.), and turned\u00a0objects.<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #105378;\"><strong>Comments:<\/strong><\/span> Closely related to <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/ceylon-ebony\/\">Ceylon ebony<\/a> , both woods are also sometimes referred to as East Indian ebony or simply Indian ebony.<\/p><p>Not to be confused with <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/african-blackwood\/\">African blackwood<\/a>, whose scientific name <em>(Dalbergia melanoxylon)<\/em> is sometimes confused with Coromandel ebony (Diospyros melanoxylon).<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_41268_1('footnote_plugin_reference_41268_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_41268_1('footnote_plugin_reference_41268_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_41268_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_41268_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Both the 2010 and 2021 editions of the USDA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/research.fs.usda.gov\/treesearch\/62242\"><em>Wood Handbook<\/em> contain a typo in section <span class=\"ext-footnote\">3-3<\/span><\/a> referring to African blackwood as <em>Diospyros melanoxylon.<\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_41268_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_41268_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script> Despite its jet-black heartwood, African blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon) is actually more correctly a rosewood than an ebony, though in practice it really is one of the best &#8220;ebony&#8221; species.<\/p><p>The Latin <em>melanoxlyon<\/em> comes from the Greek <em>melano<\/em> which means black, and <em>xylon<\/em> which means wood. Species names can be re-used in a lot of different genera. For instance, <em>rubra<\/em> means red, so you can have <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/red-oak\/\">red oak <em>(Quercus rubra)<\/em><\/a> or <a class=\"hw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/red-elm\/\">red elm <em>(Ulmus rubra)<\/em><\/a>\u2014both use the same <em>rubra<\/em> species name but are in unrelated genera.<\/p><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section
