African blackwood is most often used in turned objects, where it is considered to be among the very finest of all turning woods\u2014capable of holding threads and other intricate details well. When made into clarinet or oboe bodies, the wood is typically processed on metal-working equipment, giving it a reputation as being metal-like in some of its working properties.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-odor\/\">Odor:<\/a> <\/strong>African blackwood has a mild\u2014though distinctive\u2014scent while being worked.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-allergies-and-toxicity\/\"><strong>Allergies\/Toxicity:<\/strong><\/a> Although severe reactions are quite uncommon, African blackwood has been reported as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/wood-allergies-and-toxicity\/#sensitizer\">sensitizer<\/a>. Usually most common reactions simply include eye, skin, and respiratory irritation. Since the tree grows so slowly, and is generally small and gnarly, available boards tend to be narrow\u2014though large clear sections have occasionally been harvested from older trees that yield bookmatched guitar backs (~8&#8243; wide).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/restricted-and-endangered-wood-species\/\"><strong>Sustainability:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0African blackwood is listed on CITES appendix II under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/rosewoods-bubinga-really-banned-cites\/\">genus-wide restriction on all Dalbergia species<\/a>\u2014which also includes finished products made of the wood. It&#8217;s also\u00a0reported by the IUCN as being near threatened.\u00a0Technically\u00a0it doesn&#8217;t meet the Red List criteria of a vulnerable or endangered species, but is close to qualifying and\/or may\u00a0qualify\u00a0in the near future.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #105378;\"><strong>Common Uses:<\/strong><\/span> Musical instruments (guitars, clarinets, oboes, etc.), inlay, carving, tool handles, and other turned objects.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a name=\"comments\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/comments\/\">Comments:<\/a><\/strong> To be considered the original ebony, African Blackwood was imported and used in Ancient Egypt thousands of years ago. Even the name &#8220;ebony&#8221; has an Egyptian derivation as &#8220;hbny&#8221;\u2014which has been shown to refer to primarily to <em>Dalbergia melanoxylon<\/em>, rather than the species which are considered to be ebony today: such as those in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/hardwoods\/ebenaceae\/diospyros\/\">Diospyros genus<\/a>. In addition, African blackwood is technically in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-identification\/by-scientific-name\/#dalbergia\">Rosewood genus (Dalbergia)<\/a>, and is more stable and resistant to movement and warping than other types of ebony.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">African blackwood is considered to be among the hardest and densest of woods in the world; indeed, among some 285 species tested, (including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/lignum-vitae\/\">Lignum Vitae<\/a>), <a title=\"The actual number listed is the amount of pounds-force (lbf) or newtons (N) required to imbed a .444 inch (11.28 mm) diameter steel ball into the wood to half the ball\u2019s diameter. This number is given for wood that has been dried to a 12% moisture content, unless otherwise noted.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/janka-hardness\/\">Gabriel Janka<\/a> originally found <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=2H1n1vaL5DoC&amp;pg=PA196&amp;lpg=PA196&amp;dq=african+blackwood+hardness&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=PvJTfgxDgM&amp;sig=1SRJhdKe0I-LgX8px5Jw5iINS6U&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=MvJ6S7CXHYmDnQf-1qyhCQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=10&amp;ved=0CDAQ6AEwCQ#v=onepage&amp;q=african%20blackwood%20hardness&amp;f=false\">African Blackwood to be the very hardest<\/a>. Unfortunately, many online sources list African blackwood&#8217;s Janka hardness at only ~1700lb<sub>f\u2014<\/sub>which seems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fpl.fs.usda.gov\/documnts\/fplrp\/fpl_rp643.pdf\">very unlikely given its confirmed specific
