Yet paradoxically, the wood has been virtually loved to death: since 1992, it&#8217;s been on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cites.org\/eng\/app\/appendices.php\">CITES Appendix I<\/a>, the most\u00a0restrictive\u00a0category of endangered species, (even finished products may not cross international borders). Because of these\u00a0protective measures, several\u00a0substitutes\u00a0have been used in recent years, primarily East Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia). Each sample above represents approximately a 3\/8&#8243; square section of endgrain. The key is in the <em><strong>pore density: East Indian Rosewood has about twice as many pores per square inch as Brazilian Rosewood.<\/strong><\/em> This can be difficult to gauge if you don&#8217;t have any known samples to compare, but Brazilian Rosewood should have fairly sparsely spaced pores, while\u00a0East Indian Rosewood should be almost riddled with pores.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<div id=\"datab-1647225108\" style=\"margin-top: 15px;margin-bottom: 15px;\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3550840598661096\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3550840598661096\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"6412179582\" \ndata-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\ndata-ad-format=\"fluid\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>[vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Another Useful Trick<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Apart from the very characteristic odor, (which should roughly separate it from most non-Dalbergia species), Brazilian Rosewood has another characteristic that can be leveraged in order to help distinguish it from other rosewoods: its <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/what-is-wood\/#sap-heart\">heartwood extractives<\/a> are not water soluble, and will not fluoresce under a blacklight<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Before you get scared off from performing this test, be aware that with a simple blacklight bulb available in any hardware store for\u00a0only a few dollars, and a few minutes of your time, you can perform both water extract\u00a0fluorescence\u00a0and ethanol extract\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wood-database.com\/wood-articles\/fluorescence-a-secret-weapon-in-wood-identification\/\">fluorescence\u00a0tests<\/a> at home!<\/p>\n<p>For suspected samples of Brazilian Rosewood, take a small test tube or other small transparent container and fill it with some shavings, (a handplane works great for this), and then fill the remainder of the container with water and shake it up for a few seconds. Bring the container under the blacklight and observe the results: true Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia nigra) will not\u00a0fluoresce\u00a0or show any\u00a0appreciable\u00a0change of color under the blacklight, while most other rosewoods will glow a pale blue\/green color.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Telling Brazilian Rosewood apart from other common substitutes:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Non-Dalbergias:<\/strong> Use scent to rule out most non-Dalbergia species.
